Beyond Words Dance Company Interview with Kate Jablonski

Beyond Words Dance Company in Lyons, Illinois, was established in 2009 by Artistic Director Kate Jablonski to provide a positive outlet for expression for flourishing young dancers ages 10 to 18. just wowCompany members train in the disciplines of ballet, jazz, lyrical, and contemporary, and are taught life lessons of teamwork, commitment, responsibility, and work ethic through the art of dance. Kate’s goal is to create a supportive environment where dancers are inspired and motivated to reach their highest potential.

According to Kate, one major difference between Beyond Words and other studios is that for Beyond Words, each year culminates in a stunning showcase that gives dancers invaluable insight into the world of professional dance.  While the second act of the show is their competition repertoire, in March they begin working on fresh material for an original first act.  Since their rehearsal space (Foundations Performance Center) converts into a theater, the year-end showcase encompasses innovative and daring stage elements that challenge the dancers in a new way.

According to Kate, their goal for this year is to be better than last year and to continue to push boundaries in the dance world!

Kate – dancer, teacher, choreographer – is the owner and artistic director of Beyond Words Dance Company, The Kate Jablonski Statement and Camp Kate. With a Bachelor’s degree in Business from University of Illinois at Chicago, she is a co-founder of Foundations Performance Center along with Amber Alonzo of Expression Dance Studio. In addition to running her Chicago based companies, Kate frequently travels both nationally and internationally to share her passion for the art of dance and has taught and choreographed internationally for dance companies in countries including Switzerland, Italy and Holland.

She doesn’t believe that there is any one specific moment that defines her proudest moment coaching.  In class, it is very rewarding when something clicks for a student. If you have been giving them a correction and then one day they just get it, that’s gratifying! It is also incredibly rewarding to see the finished products, whether they are individual pieces or full shows.  To watch your vision become reality and recognize all of the hard work that everyone has put in to make that happen is very satisfying.

Kate believes the biggest mistake she sees dancers make is technique. In addition to their two ballet classes per week, Beyond Words Dance Company offers a technique class every Tuesday. The class is a choreographed workout set to music that incorporates elements of barre, yoga and palates. It is designed to strengthen not only their students’ bodies, but their minds as well. It’s not an easy hour and a half!

While earning her Bachelor’s degree in Business from University of Illinois at Chicago, Kate realized she wanted to be in charge. Additionally, she enjoys the freedom of being able to create whatever she wants with her dancers. As a result, Beyond Words Dance Company, The Kate Jablonski Statement and Camp Kate were born.

In addition to Beyond Words Dance Company, Kate runs an adult company called The Kate Jablonski Statement designed to provide training and performance opportunities for elite dancers 18 and up who want to pursue a career in dance performance. She also runs Camp Kate in the summer where dancers will have the opportunity to train with Kate in an intimate, positive and fun setting at the Foundations Performance Center. Camp Kate is a three-day dance intensive drawing students from all over the world!

Kate began her professional career training in New York City as a member of Broadway Dance Center’s Professional Program. Under the direction of Wes Delink, this scholarship allowed Kate to work alongside some of the greatest teachers and choreographers on the East Coast.

In 2007, Kate began using YouTube as a platform to share her choreography. What started out as a dancer keepsake quickly reached 1 million views and continued to grow. Now, Kate (or katieshmatee) has attracted over 53 thousand subscribers and over 20 million views from around the world. While becoming a worldwide phenomenon, Kate had been given the opportunity to teach and choreograph internationally for dance companies in Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, and Italy (Erice Danza). Kate’s animated teaching style has allowed her to break language barriers while traveling abroad. In 2009, Kate received the prestigious Gold Leo’s Award through Jazz Dance World Congress. Also, in 2009, she was chosen as a finalist in the Capezio A.C.E. Awards for Choreographic Excellence and finished as first runner-up. She debuted her professional dance show, “Beyond Words,” at New World Stages in Manhattan in July of 2010.
