Elite Dance Studio Interview with Dyan Lopez-Fiamengo

Elite Dance StudioDynamic, inspirational, motivational, impressive, nurturing, educational, technical, family feel, inviting, quaint, one on one training, personable, and energetic feel – that is how Elite Dance Studio Rolling Hills Estates, California is described.

Their instructors have worked with top industry professionals and artists! They bring a fresh perspective and top technique to every student; Whether it is the student’s first dance class or they are a seasoned young professional, everyone receives an elite education in dance and movement.

According to Dyan Lopez-Fiamengo,  Owner and Director, they are a hands-on studio. They use muscle memory techniques, resistance training, core training, and have a strong technical foundation in all of their training.  They offer instruction in a small class setting focusing on quality, not quantity, getting the maximum results in a short period of time. Dancers come to us with little or no training and in one year they are competing against the top studios in the State beating most of them.

Dyan has several proud moments like watching her students dance on Broadway, dance and choreograph for Britney Spears, Prince, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Rockettes, start their own dance teams at the local high schools, choreograph for Dancing With the Stars, Hough brother Sister team, etc. But the proudest moment for Dyan has to be watching her daughter who she trained starting at age 15 months go from professional dancer to award winning choreographer at such a very young age. Her work is beyond her years and is stellar.

Dyan believes that the biggest mistake young dancers make is not being prepared to do it all. Being a “one note” will not allow a dancer to survive in the business. She trains her dancers how to dance several styles. She trains then how to teach. She trains them how to be a leader. She guides them if they go the college routine and how to double major. She teaches them all of the options that are available to a dancer like trade shows, infomercials, music videos, stage and tours, Amusement parks, cruises, Theater, dance teacher in a local school, commercials, and television. The most important thing she teaches her dancers is if there is no work, create it yourself.

It is Elite’s desire to bring the thrill of dance to everyone who walks into their studio. At Elite Dance Studio, everybody will be treated like they are exceptional. They strive to build an atmosphere for students that is memorable, healthy and fun. There are classes for students of any age who is looking to dance, exercise, cheer, perform, compete, etc. Elite can make it happen. They offer ballet, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop and jazz classes, along with specialty classes such acro jazz and tricks, tumble, modern and boy’s hip hop and tap. Elite Dance Studio provides a safe and nurturing environment for their dancers as they develop their students in confidence, character, and creativity. They hope you will make Elite Dance studio your home away from home.

Dyan Lopez-Fiamengo has been dancing in performance, competition, and professional dance teams since 1973. Dyan is no stranger to the dance world or the Palos Verdes Peninsula. She has been working with three generations now and after 30 years of teaching, has opened up her dance studio with her then 19 year old daughter Breeonna.  After teaching at over 20 dance studios in the greater Los Angeles area Dyan knew what she did and did not want at her studio. She had great mentors through the years and merged that with her creative business partner Breeonna and voila, Elite Dance Studio was started. In just two years Elite teams have won best technique, best concept, most creative, MVP, video pick and is up for a trip to Cancun, best costumes, best music, most inspirational, most photogenic, high points and sweepstakes, etc. Dyan has had her Electric Youth Dance Company since 1997 and has now changed the name to Elite dance Company. At the highest levels they have BFDC, Tap, and Senior teams. At the intermediate level they have their Junior and Mini Teams. At the performance level they have their petite, all boys, and cheer teams.

They have 8 competition companies from Petites to Seniors plus Tap, Cheer and 40+.  Additionally, there are three performance groups – Platinum, Titanium and Diamonds.

All teams at Elite will have the opportunity to compete at two competitions a year with the higher levels up to 7. All teams at Elite will have performance opportunities at venues such as local amusement parks, fairs, theater performances, and half time shows. Some groups will have TV opportunities as well. For the mature dancer they have Electric Crew Adult team and the Ole Skool Crew over 40 dance team for the WNBA LA Sparks. For the professional Tap dancers, they have the Hot Cotton Candies Tap Company with the orchestra Le Jazz Hot. This is 20-40’s style of dancing for mostly corporate.

Combined credits for some of these teams have been Lakers, Clippers, Galaxy, and Sparks half time performances, channel 5, 9, and 11 appearances, local theater shows, celebrity performances, opened for the 4 Tops, Mandrel Sisters, Home and Family show, The Kardashians, Worlds Fairs, cruise ship performances, etc.  Dyan brings her joy of choreography, performance and passion to Elite as well as the entire team staff.

Dyan has three goals this year –  build a new 5 room studio, design mature women’s wear costumes, and write an original screen play that her singers will be performing summer of 2017.

Dyan decided to start her own studio when her daughter decided not to go to college. Her Group Shotdaughter needed work, and Dyan needed her to have work. Her daughter was enjoying sleeping in until 1 p.m. daily and Dyan thought . . .. time to get a job. Plus, starting her own studio has always been on her bucket list, but the timing has never been right until 2012 – a year after her daughter graduated from high school.

A few things one should know about her dance studio is as follows; they have an over 40 adult dance team that performs at Clippers, Sparks, D’Fenders, California Adventure, local fairs and theaters. They have an all male dance team and classes. They have an award winning competition team for ages from 6 to 18. They have an award winning competition cheer team. Breeonna Fiamengo Dance Company has won top awards from MVP, Best Technique, Most inspirational, Most Entertaining, Best costumes, etc. They make it their goal to take every recreational dancer that has a goal of getting superior, and turn them into a beautiful technical dancer within a year or two. A little something someone should know about Dyan is that she cares. She is a mentor and will take the young dancer and work one on one with them, giving them the confidence they need to get to the next level.

One thing Dyan noticed with this generation is that they are going for wow factor instead of entertainment value or the pure enjoyment of dance. They do not dance from the heart but are more like robots going from one trick to another. They get so caught up in out doing their fellow dancers with tricks that they forget about their dance. Dance was originally meant for praise and worship and in almost every culture there is a traditional dance. Here in the United States, for decades dance has been an outlet for many. Attending the theater to watch the dancers and actors has been a life saver, especially during the depression.
