Intempo Dance Interview with Rocio Braggiato

Team PhotoIntempo Dance in Katy (West Houston area), Texas, offfers dance styles like Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Acrobatics, Musical Theatre and more. When Rocio Braggiato, Owner and Artistic Director, opened the studio about 4 years ago they wanted it to not only be a legacy, but be a family business and for their customers to not only feel at home but to feel like part of the family. They want their students to enjoy coming to dance class every day no matter what kind of dance it is.

Continuing a prestigious legacy that started in 1963 at the “Estudio de Danza Paloma Bernal” in Mexico City, Intempo Dance is proud to bring fine dance instruction to the West Houston/Katy area. The founders of Intempo have been involved in the Ballet and Dance Arts world for over 40 years with literally thousands of students. Their school is based on and accredited by the world renown Royal Academy of Dance located in London, England . They offer dance classes of all levels from classes for beginners to classes that prepare dancers for professional careers. At Intempo Dance their goal is to help students achieve their goals in dance and to give them the self-confidence to become the best person they can be.

Intempo is an official Royal Academy of Dance Center. Every year, they have evaluations and examinations judged by an authorized, world renowned examiner. Many of their students that are enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dance exam system and have also been selected to represent Intempo at prestigious Summer intensives like American Ballet Theater, Boston Ballet, Oklahoma City Ballet, Houston Ballet and the MET. They have two big productions every year also, a Spring recital and a full length Nutcracker. Intempo Dance Ensemble 501(c)(3) is their nonprofit organization that raises funds for their scholarship program but also reaches out to the community to become more involved in the arts.

Rocio cannot pick her proudest moment as a dance coach, but is proud every day when she balletsees her students’ hard work pay off and when they reach their goals and accomplishments. Seeing their faces light up when they achieve their goal is one of the most satisfying things in the world.

According to Roccio, the biggest mistake she sees many dancers make is not realizing how important it is to have a good and healthy foundation. If necessary, Roccio would go back to the basics or the very beginner of their training even though it may be physically and emotionally painful. Dance is more than just a sport, it gives you discipline, teaches you commitment, developed multiple parts of the brain, and builds team working abilities.

Their main goal at Intempo is to maintain the love for dancing and a high quality standard of technique, not just for this year but every year. Another thing they are trying to accomplish this year is create more programs to help the community and encourage the growth of their students not only as dancers but as humans as well.

Their Intempo Dance Ensemble is becoming a non-profit organization separate from the Intempo Dance Academy. It is an advanced program for students who desire to be more involved than just simple recreational classes, who want to have more opportunities to learn choreography, and to have more opportunities to perform than just the standard end of semester performances. Intempo  Dance Ensemble recognizes dancers who show technical promise, drive to succeed, and excellent work ethic by selecting them to be part of the Company Program. The Nutcracker Sweet and Holiday Market Fundraiser brings the community and families together as a prelude to the performance of The Nutcracker presented by Intempo Dance and Intempo Dance Ensemble. They hope to make this a magical tradition.

Their Alice in Wonderland Tea Party was a fundraiser created by Intempo Dance Ensemble to reach out to the community to get more involved in the arts, to raise funds for young dancers to be able to dance during the summer, as well as a prelude for Intempo Dance’s production of Alice in Wonderland.

Intempo Dance invites everyone to start their holiday season off with the Magic of the Nutcracker and delight in a delectable tea party with an assortment of confectionary treats and sandwiches while meeting their favorite Nutcracker characters. Guests may also enjoy a special reading and performances from The Nutcracker Suite. There are character photo opportunities and autographs. Additionally, guests might find that special gift at Intempo’s Nutcracker Mini – Market from local Katy vendors.

Three LadiesRoccio’s mother was a professional dancer and they had a family studio in Mexico. Consequently, you could say that dancing runs in their family’s blood. Her mother inspired her to follow her dreams of being a Principal Dancer. Roccio became a Principal Dancer at the Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM in 1985 and for ten years performed different main roles. She has been teaching for more than 30 years now and is a Royal Academy certified teacher and Mentor. Her family has been dancing for three generations.

This summer, Intempo offers summer camps and three intensives – two ballet intensives and one Jazz intensive.

The theme of their summer camp this year is Frozen. Every day they will begin with a small warm-up that introduces the students to dance and starts to develop their gross and fine motor skills using music, rhythm and different props. They will also provide arts and crafts that are focused around the Frozen characters.

The Ballet Intensive is designed to challenge students and help improve not only their technique but also their artistry and creativity. Every day they will have a ballet, pointe, composition, and stretch and tone class. There will also be a special surprise class every day.

The Jazz Intensive is based on a training scheme in which allows dancers to learn how to be performers and to expand their artistry and creativity. They will have jazz, ballet, tap, musical theatre, and leaps and turns classes. There will also be a stretch and tone class every day.

At Intempo Dance, they will give the guidance and support so that classes are not only productive, but fun!
