Jazz Unlimited Studio of Dance Arts Interview with Carryl Slobotkin

PerformanceJazz Unlimited Studio of Dance Arts (“JU”) in Marlton, New Jersey, is a dance studio for all ages and all skill levels.  It is a place where students are constantly learning, growing and excelling in the art of dance as well as making lifelong friendships, creating precious memories and building self-confidence.

For over 40 years, their 1,500 student studio has created a reputation for excellence. Their school boasts a team of passionate, skilled teachers who have experience with professional dance companies, degrees in dance or both. Many of their instructors have been involved with Jazz Unlimited for over 20 years.

Keeping on top of current trends is an additional reason Jazz Unlimited continues to be one of the top dance studios in South Jersey. Their Owner and Artistic Director, Carryl Slobotkin, has years of experience choreographing and judging competitions which has given her the chance to work with some of the best, including the opportunity to choreograph for the Eagles’ cheerleaders. Carryl invites guest instructors on a regular basis to infuse classes with fresh techniques, styles, and moves which further inspires and energizes staff and students.

JU is a safe haven that allows dancers of all personalities and ages to express themselves. The studio truly bustles with positive energy. Many of their students started at the youngest age and danced through high school and sometimes beyond high school. “They meet friends from beyond their neighborhoods and schools, creating bonds and friendships that last a lifetime,” Carryl says. “I want parents and students to experience this energy from their first visit and each time they addend class. There are no better words than when a parent says, ‘My kids love coming here.’”

In the Carryl’s opinion, what separates their studio from other dance studios is the fact that their highly qualified teachers with professional experience and proper dance education are the backbone of this studio, and they provide their dancers with a positive teaching environment that focuses on both dance technique and essential life skills like respect, teamwork and responsibility.  They also strongly emphasize the importance of class placements.  Carryl wants to ensure that every dancer at JU experiences the right balance of challenging moments and achievements in the classroom.

Jazz Unlimited is about more than just Jazz. In addition to Jazz, they offer classes in Tap, Ballet, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Acro, Jazz/Tap, Creative, Mommy and Me, and Adult Dance Class. The Creative Classes are for 3 to 6 year olds and are a combination of Jazz and Ballet. Tap is included in the 4 to 6 year olds. Thia class is designed to help the pre-school child develop poise, rhythm, and coordination while providing an excellent foundation for future dance training. The Mommy and Me Classes give the moms an opportunity to interact with their children. This class is geared to help develop self-confidence, musicality and motor skills and is a combination of tumbling, creative movement and music. Their Adult Dance Class offer Tap, Jazz and Hip Hop and provides fitness through dance. These classes make it enjoyable for beginners to advance dancer to have the ability to trim down and tone up while learning several dance techniques.

Carryl’s “proudest moments” come every single day when she sees the dancers working to their fullest potential and experiencing their love for dance.  Their enthusiasm for dance and for Jazz Unlimited is the most rewarding part of being a dance teacher and studio owner.

It is Carryl’s belief that one of the biggest mistakes she sees dancers make is not realizing that there is a place for everyone in the world of dance.  Dance is a universal language.  Age, skill nor gender matter!  They all dance because it makes them happy, so even if you cannot kick your leg high or do 6 pirouettes, you should never stop dancing!

Carryl’s goals are the same each year – to provide a place where her students can continue to develop as both dancers and as members of their community and to help them realize the countless benefits of the performing arts.

Carryl founded Jazz Unlimited because of her dancers! She was teaching at a local high school and the girls were having such a great time in her class that they begged Carryl to teach more.  At the time, she could not have imagined that she, and Jazz Unlimited, would still be around 46 years later with over 1,500 students!

This is Jazz Unlimited’s 46th year and they continue to strive for dance excellence every year! They have a wonderful facility including six first-rate studios.  They also have a competition team called the Jazz Unlimited Dance Ensemble.  The Ensemble is an award-winning, nationally recognized troupe of approximately 75 young performers.  Chosen for the group because of their talent, passion and potential, Ensemble members log thousands of hours in classes and have earned innumerable accolades from audiences inspired by their work.

In addition to remaining committed to furthering their dance education, the Ensemble dancers are also committed to giving back to their community. This year they have honed their craft in dance classes given by master teachers, earned multiple awards at various competitions and also performed at the M’kor Shalom clergy dinner, at benefits for Leukemia research and Cherokee High School, and at the Fifth Annual Dance 4 a Cause. This year the “cause” was Drea’s Dream, a foundation that supports dance therapy for children with special needs and cancer.

Lastly, they put on a spectacular recital performance at the end of each dance year that showcases all of their dancers from the 3 year-olds to the adults!
