Priscilla and Dana’s School of Dance Interview with Dana McGuire

Team PhotoPriscilla and Dana’s School of Dance in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area, is a place to learn, grow and have fun. They provide dance instruction for dancers of all ages and abilities. According to Dana McGuire, Co-Owner of Priscilla and Dana’s School of Dance, dancing and owning their own studio runs in the family especially, when you consider that Priscilla is Dana’s mom.

Dana believes that every studio is unique in its own way. She believes that P and D has an unbelievable staff.  They all love what they do, and truly want what is best for each dancer.  In addition, their dancers are very well-rounded.  One of the most common (and rewarding) compliments they get from judges is how versatile their dancers are. They excel in tap, jazz, ballet, musical theater, contemporary, lyrical, and hip hop.

Since 1969, Priscilla and Dana’s School of Dance has provided professional dance instruction in both recreational and competitive classes in tap, ballet, pointe, modern, lyrical, jazz and hip hop for children ages 3 and up.

They provide their dance classes in two formats – Combination Classes and Technique Young Girlclasses. All combination classes (i.e., ballet/tap/jazz) perform a routine in P and D’s annual recital. P and D’s specialized technique classes are an in-depth study of each discipline. The technique classes do not perform in their annual recital. Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Leaps & Turns, Modern, Pointe and Tap classes are offered in various levels. The technique classes also include classes in Conditioning and Technique for Dance Team and Tumbling for Dancers.

Their award-winning competition teams are a fantastic way for their students to explore his/her love of dance, greatly improve his/her skills and make new friends! P and D offers two levels of competition.  The first one is Hot Shots which is for Pre K through 1st grade dancers. Hot Shots attend regional competitions only. The second team is Superstars. Superstars is for dancers age 4 and up and is a full competition program which includes attending nationals.

P and D’s students and alumni have participated in numerous high school and college cheer and dance teams. Their student, Hayley Erbert, was one of the final 3 ladies on So You Think You Can Dance during Season 10!

Dana has had so many great moments through the years.  She says seeing the dancers they teach grow into amazing adults is the most fulfilling part of her job.  She loves seeing their growth and success as dancers, but a productive and happy life is the best.  She says that they spend so much time with these kids that the kids become a part of them.

PerformanceIn Dana’s opinion, the biggest mistakes she sees dancers make is not being prepared for rehearsal. She points out that this is totally something they can control.

Her goals for the coming year are to continue to encourage the love of dance to grow in their dancers, provide a positive and fun environment, and to make a difference in these dancer’s lives.

An interesting fact is that the majority of their teachers grew up competing for P and D and Priscilla and Dana have known these teachers their entire lives.  The two that did not grow up at P and D have been with them for 14 and 25 years.  Their staff is a true family, and they love having their dancers and their families as a part of their family.
