The Greater Boston School of Dance Interview with Kerrin Michaels

Kerrin Michaels is Owner and Director of the Greater Boston School of Dance (GBSD) in Boston, Massachusetts. The studio prides itself on is being a place for students that want to take their dancing to a new level. The staff is dedicated to making students stand out from the crowd. They are passionate about teaching proper technique, but even more passionate about good sportsmanship, kindness and while at competitions appreciation and support of other studios!

Having a strong musical theatre background, Kerrin knows how important it is for dancers to be “triple threats.” Every year, the dancers have to sing in at least one routine. This year they competed with a Musical Theatre Tap routine to “Anything Goes” where they had a lead singer and the team sang chorus. GBSD tries to push their dancers out of their comfort zone and do something that will make them better, stronger dancers in the long run.

Kerrin’s proudest moments as a coach occurred during their competitions this year. Not only did their team take home multiple first place trophies locally and nationally, but their studio was awarded “kindness” and “backstage awards” at several competitions this season. In Motion Training Center Interview with Lona Smith

Atlanta Dream Shooting Stars Cheer Team Interview with Team Captains, Bianca and Jarri

The Atlanta Dream Shooting Stars Cheer Team for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream is consists of dynamic dancers that take pride in higher education, career ambitions, and being role models for youth and the Metro Atlanta community. All members of the team must be a full-time student and/or have a full-time career. Thus, their team is well rounded with various talents ranging from dancing center court to leading a classroom. Their dance team is a high energy group of men and women who encompass a combination of styles and techniques and embrace diversity in the musical selections they choose to accompany their performances.

In the opinion of Bianca and Jarri, Team Captains, what separates their dance ;l from others is their relationship with their fans. Their games are very family-oriented and The Shooting Stars enjoy getting the opportunity to have personal connections with their fans.  In addition, they are a co-ed team of cheerleaders that dance various styles from hip hop to jazz to pop to pom. They are the only professional cheer and dance team in Atlanta that is co-ed, which is special to their team as well as their “trade secret” to being so versatile and unique. Priscilla and Dana’s School of Dance Interview with Dana McGuire

Team PhotoPriscilla and Dana’s School of Dance in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area, is a place to learn, grow and have fun. They provide dance instruction for dancers of all ages and abilities. According to Dana McGuire, Co-Owner of Priscilla and Dana’s School of Dance, dancing and owning their own studio runs in the family especially, when you consider that Priscilla is Dana’s mom.

Dana believes that every studio is unique in its own way. She believes that P and D has an unbelievable staff.  They all love what they do, and truly want what is best for each dancer.  In addition, their dancers are very well-rounded.  One of the most common (and rewarding) compliments they get from judges is how versatile their dancers are. They excel in tap, jazz, ballet, musical theater, contemporary, lyrical, and hip hop.

Since 1969, Priscilla and Dana’s School of Dance has provided professional dance instruction in both recreational and competitive classes in tap, ballet, pointe, modern, lyrical, jazz and hip hop for children ages 3 and up.

Divas of Olive Branch Interview with Neva McGruder

“Divine Inspired Victorious and Annointed! That is the sheer essence of a DIVA!” The Divas of Olive Branch is an award winning dance team from Mississippi that is Creative, Transformative, and Inspiring. They take a lot of time to make sure that what they present each season is entertaining for all different ages. They pride themselves in knowing how to put on a show! People wait to see what they are bringing to the stage each season. Mario Shaw, the Head Choreographer, has been part of the success and achievements of The Divas together with Neva McGruder. They have been together for a total of 12 years.

Neva McGruder, better known as “Neva The Diva,” is the Owner, Artistic Director, and Head Coach for the Divas of Olive Branch and Tate County Teams. The Divas recently expanded their team from Southhaven, Mississippi, to include Cold Water Mississippi and they are very new. Neva started as a result of the surviving breast cancer. She is a 10 years Survivor!

Neva believes that what separates her dance team from the rest is their ability to be authentic and creative and that they are able to show strong leadership while on the floor. Their choreography is trend setting and they have a great time performing it!

A Dance Place Interview with Farrah Dobbins

Eaton-Ballet-Poms-1-Recital-GroupA Dance Place with four studios in Colorado (Windsor, Greeley, Eaton, and Fort Collins) is fondly described as a family friendly studio whose goal is to build confidence and esteem in their students, while instilling a love of dance that will last a lifetime. They lpride themselves in welcoming all dancers, regardless of their ability or experience, and conducting classes in a positive, encouraging atmosphere.  They are also very aware of family needs, so everything is age appropriate, including choreography, music, costume, and especially rehearsal times!

Farrah Dobbins, Business Director of A Dance Place, believes there are several things that separates their studios from other studios. One is that they are conservative and family friendly (as mentioned above) and have equal emphasis for both recreational and their Troupe dancers; their preschool program is top-notch; and they have a set curriculum and training program in place for all of their instructors. The Scripps Performing Arts Academy Interview with Miah Nwosu

Angela Drew MiahThe Scripps Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) has two locations in San Diego, California.  For this article, we interviewed Miah Nwosu, the Academy Principal of SPAA and the Artistic Director of their Youth Company in Residence, Scripps Ballet Theatre, the Academy. Miah describes SPAA as a training facility that places equal value on technical, artistic and whole person development of each and every student that walks through their doors, regardless of the student’s long term goals.

Scripps provides strong, diverse training in a familial atmosphere where students feel comfortable to explore their boundaries and receive positive feedback. They care about their students as individuals and tailor their schedules and training programs to their needs. They recognize that each dancer is an individual and an invaluable part of their studio family.

According to Miah, it is very hard for her to narrow her proudest moments as a coach down to just one moment. In the class or rehearsal sense, she says it has to be when she sees a student working on applying a correction, artistic or technical instruction, have that moment where it clicks. Broadway Bound Dance Center Interview with Kim Helfrich

Kim HelfrichBroadway Bound Dance Center (BBDC) has been in operation in Lebanon, Hunterdon County, New Jersey for 19 years. They offer instruction for ages 2 through adult in all areas of dance beginner thru advanced; recreational dance classes and a competition dance team called “The Force” for the more experienced dancer. They provide a friendly atmosphere, and their students get a sense of accomplishment when they are dancing.

BBDC provides dance training for students of all ages.  Their objective is to develop technical training with an emphasis on creativity, musicality, artistry, flexibility, quality of movement and performance.  They offer classes for all levels – from beginning students to dancers who hope to pursue a career in the performing arts.

Broadway Bound is dedicated to finding and exceeding each student’s goals and potential in dance. Whether the student is taking a single class for fun and/or exercise, or trying to get into the college dance program of their dreams, Broadway Bound is there to support them.
