How to Add Fringe to a Glove

In this lesson, we will show you how to add fringe to a glove similar to those used on costumes shown on Bring It or on majorette costumes.

Supplies:

  1. Glove
  2. Fringe
  3. Thread to match gloves
  4. Pins
  5. Scissors

Directions:

  1. Choosing Your Materials

You will want to choose a glove that either matches or complements your costume. The fringe can match the glove or other colors of the costume or complement one of them. If you want, you could even make fringe from Lycra that matches or complements your costume. (See our earlier lesson on making Fringe From Lycra.)

  1. Preparing the Glove

The easiest way to prepare the glove is to turn the glove inside out and take out the stitches in the seam. In the case of the glove we are using for this instruction, the glove is a little too big, so we are going to just cut the glove along the seam and remove that edge. Either way, you will want to leave about an inch at the top and an inch at the bottom of the glove seam which will keep the glove intact. You only want to cut that seam edge away like we are doing in this demonstration if the glove is too large because once you sew it back together, it will be smaller.

Remember, the glove needs to stretch and premade fringe does not stretch. Therefore, you need to stretch the glove out to determine the length of fringe needed. If it is possible to put the glove on the girl and then stretch it out, that is the ideal way to do it. If that is not possible, just stretch the glove out to determine the length of the opening in the glove the best that you can. This will determine the length of the fringe that you will need.

Cut the fringe to the length that will fit the opening in the stretched glove.

  1. Pinning the fringe

With the glove inside out, pin the fringe to the edge of the opening on one side of the glove seam. Pin one end of the fringe to the top of the opening of the glove, one at the center of the opening and the other end of the fringe to the bottom of the opening. Remember to pin the fringe so that it will be inside the glove between the two sides of the glove while it is inside out. Make sure that any webbing on the fringe will be sewn inside the glove while it is inside out. Some of that webbing may end up outside the edge of the seam. If you wish, you can add more pins. Just make sure to keep stretching the glove so that the fringe is spread out evenly.

Once you have the fringe pinned to the one side of the glove, stretch the glove out again and pin the two sides of the glove together (with the fringe in between them) in the same manner. Make sure that all the ends of the fringe are tucked inside the glove and away from the seam. At this point, you will see webbing between the edges of the glove and the fringe itself tucked inside. (The glove is still inside out.) You want to make sure that all of the webbing will be inside the seam when you turn the glove right side out again.

  1. Sewing the glove back together

Sew the glove back together along the original seam line. If you make the seam bigger, the glove will become smaller. If you do not have a stretch stitch, you can use a nice, wide zig zag stitch. The zig zag stitch will allow the glove to stretch. Before you actually start stitching, check again to make sure that the fringe webbing is even and will be inside the seam.

  1. Finishing

Finally, turn the glove right side out and remove the thread that holds the ends of the fringe together.

If the fringe is too long, you can trim it shorter. However, if you are going to trim the fringe, I would suggest cutting it before you remove the thread holding the ends of the fringe together.

And, there you have it. A glove with fringe along the side to make it very dramatic. You could use this method on one glove or on both gloves. As with almost everything else, it is your choice and your preference.
