Broadway South Dance Studio (BSDS) in Mobile, Alabama, is owned by husband and wife team Michelle Adams-Meeker and Warren Meeker. Co-Owner and Director Michelle describes their studio as one providing a solid foundation for the recreational dancer as well as the dancer who wants to pursue a career in dance. Additionally, their versatile staff allows for dancers to train from all styles of teachers in all disciplines.
When Broadway South opened in October, 2006, Broadway South had approximately 200 students at their one of a kind, state of the art dance studio. Now in their tenth season, over 550 students call the award winning studio their home. With their large variety of classes and three family friendly locations to choose from (West Mobile, Regency and Saraland), they offer over 100 weekly choices in dance. Broadway South’s fascinating and versatile staff has been seen on ABC, ESPN, MTV, TLC, Style Network, Oxygen, and the stages of Lincoln Center, The Metropolitan Opera House, and Madison Square Garden. Their teachers have trained at top schools such as New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Broadway Dance Center, Debbie Reynolds School, Gus Giordano, and Tisch School of the Arts. Their performances include appearing with Ben Vereen, Paula Abdul, Liza Minelli, Chita Rivera, Debbie Allen, Sonya Tayeh, Mia Michaels, Whoopie Goldberg, Suzanne Farell, to name a few and their talented faculty have appeared on stages around the world.
Michelle believes that their studio is different from other studios because of their state of the art facilities and the fact that their faculty is among the most diverse in the Southeast. Their sleek and modern facilities are equal to the top studios in the country such as Broadway Dance Center, Alvin Ailey, and School of American Ballet and are unique in Mobile. They have also been named one of the Top 50 Dance Studios in The USA to Watch in 2015 and honoured again as one of the Top 50 Dance Studios in The USA to Watch in 2016. Broadway South has the largest faculty on the Gulf Coast offering you the widest selection of teachers to find just the right fit for your dancer. They are thrilled to be Mobile’s most versatile studio with a reputation of caring for each dancer and their family like they are a member of our own.
Broadway South Dance Studio was honoured by the Southern Alabama Awards (SAL Awards) in 2008 as a top business in Southern Alabama. Michelle was recently featured in Dance Studio Life magazine in the teacher spotlight and Broadway South Dance was featured in the July 2008 issue of Dance Magazine as one of 6 of the country’s most successful studios. Broadway South has recently been featured in Dance Teacher Magazine and Access Magazine. In 2010, Michelle was awarded the top award at CoDance indicating superiority in the direction of her company and studio and influencing her dancers in the most productive and positive way creating versatile and strong dancers. Michelle and her husband reside in Mobile with her proudest productions her daughter, Morgan and sons, Ryan and Kylan.
Her proudest moment as a studio owner and teacher was seeing their dancers take the stage for their very first recital and watching their faces light up hitting that stage.
In Michelle’s opinion, the biggest mistake dancers make is not being willing to put the work in to get results out. Great technique just doesn’t happen. It comes from many hours of classes, the right training, and persistence. Often dancers want the result without putting in the work. They need to be willing to dive in full force and soak up every class that will work with their schedule. She believes they will learn something from each class they step into.
Michelle’s goals for this year are to continue to expand their class selections available for their dancers. Presently they are offering lessons in Contemporary, Lyrical, Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Tumbling, Technique, Musical Theatre Dance, Cheer Dance, classes for adults, Tiny Tots, and preschool. They are always updating their facilities to provide the best to their students. Michelle is always on the lookout for additional talented teachers to add to their staff as well.
Michelle is a professional who has performed and trained in New York City for over 12 years. Her numerous credits range from film, television, musicals, video, concert dance works, and stage. She was hand selected for the dance reconstruction pre-Broadway workshops of the hit musical, Fosse. Additionally, she danced in numerous musicals, Debbie Allen’s ABC TV special with Whoopie Goldberg, and the MTV Music Video Awards. She has also appeared with Ben Vereen in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and was a New York Knicks dancer for the New York Knicks basketball team. Additional television appearances include Good Morning America, The Late Show with David Letterman, New York at Night and Entertainment at Night. Michelle has also been featured in Vanity Fair, Vogue, and New York Magazine. Additionally, she has performed at The Metropoli, Lincoln Center, and Madison Square Garden. She has also assisted many Tony Award nominated choreographers, Emmy Award winning choreographers and New York’s top dance teachers.
Bringing a New York flavour to the Gulf Coast has long been a dream of Michelle’s. Their three studios provide a solid foundation for the student who wants to pursue a career as a dance professional as well as those who dance for the love of the art. Their focus is to ensure a place to nurture the growth of all types of dancers at all ages. They are rapidly being known as the studio in Mobile to give individualized attention to their students, allowing the proper and necessary dance technique to be taught to all ages of dancers. She and her husband opened their studio as a transition from Michelle’s professional dance career into the education realm. It was something she always wanted to do.
Michelle and her husband are dedicated to bringing the best dance instruction to their area. They are always working on what they can do to improve their business. They think of their dance customers as family, and hope their passion for dance comes across to their customers as well.
In addition to their everyday classes, Broadway South’s award winning dance company has a list of accolades way too numerous to name here but are available on their website.
