DanceTech Performing Company Interview with Lauren Clark

DanceTech2DanceTech Performing Co. is a student led intermediate/advanced level dance organization at Georgia Institute of Technology with a focus of performing for local charity events, such as American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Children’s Miracle Network’s Dance Marathon. Although, the organization is primarily students, our weekly classes are open to the public. Lauren Clark is the Co-founder and Director of DanceTech Performing Company.

In Lauren’s opinion, DanceTech is different from other college dance programs because it is specialized to suit students at Georgia Institute of Technology, who wish to continue to learn and grow their dance ability. With the high rigor of the school, our company creates an encouraging and stress-free environment while maintaining quality classes and performances.

There have been two major events that have made Lauren proud as an instructor. As a student organization, they often get lost in the stress of college life. Yet the first year as an organization, they had the opportunity to break from classes to perform at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. The moment watching the children’s faces illuminate with excitement when offered Female Dancersthe opportunity to dance was incredible. She could not have been more invested in ensuring the company’s success.

Last year, they were hired as the entertainment for a sponsorship pre-show prior to the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater performance at the Fox Theater in downtown Atlanta. Again, Lauren could not have been prouder of the hard work the dancers put forth in order to be recognized by a vendor beyond the Georgia Tech community.

One of the greatest mistakes Lauren sees dancers make is lowering priority of class and sacrificing technique due to inadequate time management. Balancing coursework, jobs, and social life with dance can be a great difficulty for incoming undergraduate students as the freedom to create their schedule is new. The best advice to help before the regret would be to plan everything in advance. Maintaining a routine schedule with overestimated allotted time for school work will keep one from falling behind to allow for more time in the studio to improve one’s dance skills.

DanceTech’s goal for this next year is to focus on creating more fundraisers for the charities they perform at during the semester. They hope to reach their target goal for each event.

DanceTech3Lauren founded DanceTech when she noticed the need for intermediate to advanced level dance courses at Georgia Tech. Dance was a stress reliever for her and she needed the activity to distract herself from the intense curriculum. Knowing there were many other student dancers, she sought to begin an organization to relieve the stress and allow for them to continue their passion. The organization began as an entertainment company catering to local charity events in Atlanta. As the demand grew, weekly classes were installed for students who were unable to commit the time to perform.

DanceTech offers weekly dance classes on campus for any Georgia Tech members or prospective students.

We would also like to thank B Dancewear for providing us with the amazing handcrafted shorts and the incredible customer service we received upon ordering.
