Our Dancer of the Week is Heather Thomas. She is 10 years old and has had a very strong passion for dance every since she was very young. She thinks of herself as a “perfectionist” and is very dedicated in her dance training and in her school work. She pushes herself to learn new and more technically challenging skills so that she can be a stronger dancer. She tries to stay humble in all of her achievements as she knows it is about her inside and knowing she has accomplished her goal for herself, not for anyone else. When Heather dances, she is able to express who she is in the moment because outside of dance, she is shy until you get to know her. Her friendships mean the most to her.
When Heather was very little, her parents would sit around the couch and play music. Heather would get up and dance all over. Eventually, her mom decided to ask her friends where she should take Heather to
take dance lessons. At that time they lived in California. She put Heather in classes when she was 2 ½ years old where she took ballet/tap combo classes and then began to compete when she was 4 years old. She has continued to follow her passion ever since. She now trains about 15 to 25 hours a week and travels to conventions and competitions nationally.
Being accepted into the Step It Up Los Angeles Junior Dance Workshop this past summer has been one of Heather’s happiest moments. She was able to spend a week in Los Angeles training, taking classes, photo shoots and she was able to learn a little bit about the dance industry itself. In addition to
Heather’s experience with Bailar Dancewear was very positive. A year ago, she was looking for a costume for her new contemporary solo. Her mother found Bailar Dancewear and Heather saw that they had the bandeau top and shorts that she wanted in the exact color that she wanted. Bailar Dancewear was able to customize the top and shorts for her. They were very professional and the items were shipped quickly.the performance, Heather has a passion for choreography. She would love to choreograph pieces for herself and other dancers.
She wants to continue to grow as a dancer and hopes that her new studio, B-Discovered, will challenge her to push herself even harder. She hopes to go outside of her box and travel to new conventions. But mostly, she hopes to feel a part of her new studio and to form new, strong lifelong friendships.
Heather hopes to have a professional dance career someday. She wants to be able to give the gift of dance to others as she has been given and to provide the same opportunities she has received. She hopes to choreograph for artists all over the country!
Heather stated that she is very honored and thrilled to have been chosen to be featured as Bailar Dancewear’s Dancer of the Month. But she said she could not be where she is today without all the support and encouragement from her teachers along the way who have given her the drive and passion to want to be better. She thanks them all for believing in her – Jamie Brakefield (Owner of Excel Performing Arts) and Brian Rabenda (owner of B-Discovered Dance Company).
