In this video I am going to show you how to take a maxi skirt pattern and add kick pleats. You can put this in the front, side or back of a skirt and even do it in a different color. This technique can also be used for other types of skirts. It is a fun and simple technique to give your skirt a flare.
Supplies:
- A-line Pattern
- Scissors
- Sharpie
- Ruler
- Pattern Paper of Old Sheet
Directions:
- Mark Areas Where You Will Cut
We will begin by taking the A-line pattern and folding it in half. Put weights over the pattern. From the hip line, place the ruler down it and mark the line. Now cut it out. Open the pattern up and decide how high you want the kick pleat. Mark where you want it at the center fold. I chose to do 14 inches. You will also mark the 14 inches on the side. I like to make a little notch at the marked area so I will know when I cut out the pattern to make the notch. Fold it over, and where you made the notch, make an ink mark and notch the other side. You are not going to cut that are out but you will know to sew up to that spot and stop. Now that we have that, slice the center fold open until the marked area.
- Create The Pattern with Paper or Fabric
Grab an extra pattern paper. You can also use an old fabric as well for this step. Fold the paper in half. Mark the paper at 14 inches, then do a line across the paper as well about 7 inches. Now, just connect the lines. With the longest line, mark the 14 inches and keep the tip in the spot sliding the rules. This will create an angle. Cut out the pattern at the marked areas. With that pattern you will now be able to create the pleated skirt look!
