For the purposes of this tutorial, I am going to put the halter bra on a mannequin. However, in reality you will want to try it on the girl that is going to wear it.
Before you do anything, you need to make sure that the front fits the girl properly and does not hang loose in the front. Then, you can play with the straps in the back. Also, when you come up with a look you like, you must sew the straps in place or they will slip.
With any of these looks, you need to make sure the front is fitting properly.
Supplies:
- Halter Bra
- Thread to match bra
- Needle
- Pins
- Scissors
Directions:
- Choosing Your Materials
Find a halter top in the color you want, that fits you and that has straps that tie at the neck.
- Choice of looks
The first look I am going to show you is crossing the straps in the back and then sewing them in place. If you decide to cross the straps, you will need to determine if you want the straps to cross higher on the girl’s back, in the middle of the back or lower on the girl’s back.
You could also sew it at the back of the neck and then spread the straps out to the sides of the back giving it a very unique look. In this demonstration, I am pinning the straps at the back of the neck but you will need to sew the straps together, not pin them. I have seen this look in various venues, in magazines and things like that. It gives it a very pretty back.
Something else you could do is tie the straps at the back of the neck and then twist the straps down the center of the back and sew them to the center back of the bra. You want to make sure that the twisted straps meet the bra without being too tight and pulling the back of the bra up. You could also twist them to the side and sew them to the side of the bra.
Another look is knotting the straps at the back of the neck and then pull both straps to the side of the back and pin them down two to three inches apart on the side of the back. You want to make sure they are pulled equally so that one strap does not sag and so that when the girl dances or moves, there is no bagging in the front.
Also, you could pull the straps taut and sew them in a “V” shape to the back of the bra and sewing the point of the “V” to the center back. This is a really cute look. It reminds me of butterfly wings.
Additionally, you could sew one end of the strap underneath itself creating a loop, pull the other strap through the loop, then pull it down and attach it to the back of the bra. The strap could be pulled to the left or the right of the back and then attached. You could even slide the loop down the back of the bra and then pull the strap to the left, the middle or the right of the back of the bra. There are a multitude of combinations and choices. Just play around with the placement of the “loop” on the girl’s back and the placement of the other strap on the bra’s back until you find the look that you want. To keep the straps from slipping, it is best to sew the straps together where the second strap goes through the little “loop.” Without stitching the straps together, they would not be stable and could slip when the girl is dancing.
The last look is to cross the straps a little lower on the back and make an “X” on the back and then sew the ends to the back of the bra. The “X” could be placed higher or lower on the back depending on the girl’s preference. Once you have determined where you want the “X” to be, just sew the straps together where they cross over each other.
There are so many things you could do. Just use your imagination. Just have fun and play with it. There is no limit to what your imagination can come up with.
Whatever configuration you choose to use, you will need to sew the straps where they cross and where the ends meet the back of the bra. Once they are sewn down, cut the excess straps off, but make sure you have the girl try it on one last time before you cut any excess material away.
The look you end up with all depends on the girl and what you want to do, what look you want to achieve.
