In this video, I am going to show you how to create a unique looking skirt. This particular one happens to be two layers. The thing I like about this skirt is it has a lot of flow and movement like a circle skirt. If you want a circle skirt flow but you don’t want the straight cut of the circle cut, then this is the guide for you.
Supplies:
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Marker
- Ruler
Directions:
- Take Measurements and Mark
Take the fabric and fold it in quarters. First of all you need the inner circle. There are two ways to get that. The easy one is to measure the elastic around you, fold it in half and once more so its in a quarter of the size. Now round it against the fabric corner, and mark it. Now we decide what is the longest we want the skirt. In her case, I decided to do 15 inches. Put the ruler on the marked area and measure down on the 3 different points around the fabric.
- Cut Out The Layers and Waistband
Now cut the fabric out from the marked areas. Also cut out the inner circle marked area.
Lay the cut out circle skirt in half making sure it is straightened out and flat. For this skirt, I don’t want just a rounded edge, so I am cutting it to give it more of a dramatic look. Gather the skirt straight across and cut it off to give it the different look. Be careful how short the side gets, making sure to measure their bottom so it is covered. This is going to be the top layer. So now we are going to take another piece of fabric to do the bottom layer. You have to decide how big of a difference you want the two skirts. I am going to go with a little more than an inch difference. Place the top layer over the fabric and cut around giving it the extra inch I want. The next thing we are going to cut out is the waistband. I took a pair of briefs and measured on the girl. I folded the fabric in half, making sure it is stretched out nicely. I am doing this one 4 inches with a quarter of an inch of seam allowance on each side. So I will measure 4 ½ inches in width. The area the girl is going to wear the skirt is 30 inches, so we take half of that which is 15. The Lycra I use is stretchy so I am going to do 13 inches. Now cut out it out of the fabric.
- Cut The Swirl Fabric Out
Decide how many you want and if you will be using the same fabric. Lay out the fabric and cut. I am doing 5 inches around. Now take the circle piece, and let’s say you want to go 2 inches around and mark it throughout the circle fabric. Cut along the pattern. This will give it a curly spiral look. Go ahead and cut more if you like depending on the fabric.
Now you have the pattern to make a unique looking skirt!
