The Just Dance Academy studio serves all of Marin County and is centrally located in San Rafael. The program has been in operation in Marin County for over 20 years and provides both recreational and intensive dance training. According to Deanna Masgay, the Owner and Director of the Just Dance Academy, classes are offered for students beginning at 3 years of age in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Lyrical. Not only does Just Dance produce several performances per year, they also offer a dance competition program as well as specialty dance workshops.
Deanna describes Just Dance as warm, friendly and nurturing; open to students who would like to take dance either recreationally or intensively; and open to students of all dance abilities. Their goals are to provide a fun, and inspiring dance education experience for children and to instill confidence and positive self–esteem in their students through their classes, teaching methods and their performances. They encourage students to think of Just Dance Academy as their second family with supportive fellow dancers and teachers.
In Deanna’s opinion, their studio is separated from other dance studios is that their size – they are small. Even though she does not personally teach all the students, she makes sure she knows who all their students are and if they are in need of assistance in any way. Their studio is different because students can take as little as one dance class per week or they can take as many classes per week as they like that are appropriate for their level and age. Just Dance also offers a dance competition program for those dancers who would like a more intensive dance training experience.
Deanna has had several “proudest moments” coaching? 1) Watching the youngest soloist in competition that she had ever had do extremely well her first time! Receiving a gold for her first solo competition. 2) Earning the highest award at a dance competition with a team that had been together for 10 years. 3) Each year presenting awards to their high school graduates, many of whom have danced with us for 10 or more years. 4) Rehearsing the Nutcracker Grand Pas De deux with a guest artist and a 17 year old dancer that Deanna has had since the dancer was five years of age.
To prevent mistakes and injuries, Deanna has three suggestions: 1) Work as hard as possible in ballet class! 2) Perform on stage! 3) Be very careful to stretch fully…to avoid hamstring pulls.
Deanna’s goals for this year are: Working on details! Specificity in all our exercises in all our classes! Website must be up to date and informative. Absolute organization of the program so parents are well informed.
Deanna was prompted to start her own studio by her life-long love of dancing. She was a professional dancer from 18 to 30 years of age. She began teaching at a recreation center and the program grew so large that it was inevitable that she would open a studio. It was absolutely meant to be! It is positively the most rewarding job she could ever do. What is very special is that many of their students start at a young age of 4 or 5 and continue taking lessons with them until they graduate from high school. Graduates are given the opportunity to dance a special solo/duet/trio in the year end show and Just Dance has a full presentation for the graduates at the end of the show with flowers, awards and special comments for each. It inspires their young dancers too!
The Just Dance Academy is organized, professional, friendly and they care about each and every student, whether they see the student 1 time per week or several times per week. The Just Dance Academy program has been in operation since 1993 and they are proud of the dance education they have provided to the children of their community. Each teacher at Just Dance Academy is highly qualified in the classes they instruct. The Just Dance Academy continually seeks ways to improve operations so they are offering the highest quality program possible.
