Kelly Icenhour is the owner and director of K Studio, in Columbus, Ohio. Kelly says that K Studio is a creative and innovative environment that is committed to providing professional dance education in a positive atmosphere. They guide their dancers to train with focus and enthusiasm while encouraging them to reach their maximum potential in dance. The self-discipline, self-confidence, and work ethic they will learn will serve them well throughout the rest of their lives. Their instructors are passionate about the art of dance and are committed to passing their love for dance to future generations. Kelly and the K Studio staff were awarded the Co. Dance Educator Award in both 2013 and 2014.
According to Kelly, dance offers so much more than just dance skills. Dance nurtures a healthy self-esteem, boosts self-confidence, promotes a healthy lifestyle and so much more. So, keep the kids (or yourself!) active and enjoy this wonderful form of expression!
Kelly believes that what separates her dance studio from other dance studios that at K Studio we have a balance of instilling the rich discipline of dance while having fun! They want their dancers to know their dance vocabulary – the name of a step, what it means, href=”https://blog.bdancewear.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Three-Girls.jpg”> and how it should be executed, but also have fun while doing so.
Kelly’s experience makes it hard to pick just one proudest moment, nevertheless, she says her proudest moment coaching is when a dancer walks off stage and says out loud “that felt good!” They put so much time and effort into rehearsing. She hopes that the end result does feel good and the dancers are feeling alive while on stage. She also loves to watch her dancers excel beyond the studio – taking a dance class from a new teacher in New York City or performing in a dance concert at the college they attend.
In Kelly’s opinion, the biggest mistake she sees dancers making is second guessing themselves! Whether they are afraid to really go for it or don’t think they can push any further…they can go for it, they can push further. As dancers, they must be confident individuals and Kelly hopes to help create not only confident dancers, but confident people. People that are not afraid to go for it! You never know until you try and she tells the dancers to experiment, go to that uncomfortable place because that is where the magic can happen!
Kelly’s goal s year for their recreational dancers is to really see a transformation and a growth in their movement from the first class to recital time. They have amped up their curriculum and are excited to see the results! Her goals this year for their competitive dancers is to increase their flexibility and being even more prepared with super clean dances at her first competition.
K Studio’s competitive team has earned many awards and recognition, but they are particularly proud of the JUMP Well Rounded Studio Award, the NYCDA Distinguished Achievement Award for Backstage Good Sportsmanship, Best of JUMP 2011 – “The Sun Will Set,” NYCDA Senior Critics Choice Award 2012 – “Really Very Small,: and the Co Dance Senior Faculty Choice 2014 – “Fall to Pieces.” In Kelly’s opinion, being a member of the competition dance tam is a very exciting and rewarding experience for all involved. Competitive dance provides your young dancer with opportunities to develop his or her confidence in their dance skills. Dance teaches proper posture, rhythm, co-ordination, strength, flexibility and more. Competitive dance magnifies these teachings.
Kelly knew that she was ready for the next chapter of her career and ready for a change in her career. She has always loved working with kids and knew that she could be a strong leader. She was ready for the next challenge and can say it has been great as they settle into their sixth season!
They love creating well rounded and versatile dancers. They offer classes in ballet, creative movement, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, and musical theater.
