Latin Dance Movement Interview with Hervin Alvarez

PracticeHervin Alvarez is a salsa dance performer, choreographer, instructor, and founder of Latin Dance Movement (LDM), North Miami Beach, Florida. He describes Latin Dance Movement as a Latin-dance studio focused on salsa dancing. They are committed to the growth of their students, pushing them to become better dancers in every class. Their goal is to develop salsa dancing as an art form and take the dance to new levels.

Hervin was fascinated with Latin dance from a young age. Despite growing up in a Latin culture which valued dance, like many people, he did not think he had the skills or natural ability to learn how to dance. It wasn’t until he was 17 that he finally had the courage to dive in and take his first lessons in salsa. He fell in love with it immediately. After learning the basics, he understood why so many in his culture loved the dance – it is an important form of bonding, celebrating, and expressing oneself. The ability to share a dance with someone and connect on a deep level through movement and music kept him coming back. Also, watching the best dancers in the studio inspired him to keep on learning and growing. As his dancing improved, his posture, confidence and communication style changed completely. He became a dance instructor and a performer not only because he is passionate about dance, but because he hopes to both inspire people to dance and ultimately to follow their passions.

RehearsalTheir mission is to spread the love and passion for Latin Dance (Salsa, Mambo, Cha Cha). They are dedicated to the art of self-expression through movement. They want to provide dance instruction and a dance philosophy that allows students to grow as dancers and artists. They believe in continuous growth and development and pushing themselves (instructors and students) to be the best dancers, artists and people they can be.

Their goal is to build great dancers. They teach awareness and mindfulness of the body through the practice of salsa dancing. They want the students to understand that partner dancing is a conversation, between two individuals, that flows through the platform of movement done to a song together. The result is that you feel connected to your partner, to the music, to the moment.

They focus on developing great technique, form and expression rather than focusing on the social aspects of salsa. Their goal is to develop artists!

Hervin’s proudest moment as a teacher was in the rehearsals for the 5th season of the student training team. It had been about a year and half of working with these students and their development was showing. They were starting to get it! The students were catching moves at a faster rate than ever. The quality of the work was improving, while the level of dancing was slowly getting harder. These were the moments that made him excited. He loves to see his students grow and progress in the dance.

Dancers in the salsa world make the mistake of learning many things incorrectly at once. They rush to become a “good” dancer and overlook areas of technique that are lacking in their dance. As a result, these people hinder their learning. Salsa, like any other art form, takes lots of practice and time to develop, and the process cannot be cut short.

Hervin’s goals for the rest of this year are to finish their performing Salsagroup training and have their student showcase at the start of January, 2016.

He initially started Latin Dance Movement because salsa dancing is his passion. He felt that what he had to offer as a dancer, instructor and choreographer could greatly benefit the salsa-dancing world, especially down in South Florida.
