Latin Expressions Dance Company Interview with Kyle Culmann

LEwebsiteVersionLatin Expressions Dance Company is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded by Kyle Culmann and Nadia Alvarado in 2011, Latin Expressions Dance Company offers Indianapolis the clearest, most informative and highest quality dance instruction in Salsa, Mambo, Bachata, ChaChaCha and other Latin dances. Combining their knowledge and expertise, Kyle and Nadia strive for excellence as dancers, performers and instructors.

Whether you are looking to learn the basics, gain more confidence or comfort, stand out on the dance floor or compete at the highest of levels, Latin Expressions has something for you! Offering a structured yet laid back and fun learning environment, our classes are designed to keep you engaged, having fun and learning to be your personal best. Latin Expressions is committed to improving the level of dancing in Indianapolis and sharing a love and passion for Latin dance with anybody they encounter, so beginners are always welcome!  More importantly, our students and staff grow to understand that dance is more than just a hobby; it is a passion empowered by the relationships we build on and off the dance floor.

Latin Expressions Dance Company provides a fun, informative and relaxed learning environment.  While maintaining a healthy balance between learning and having a good time, Latin Expressions has the perfect atmosphere to ensure every student gets the most out of their experience in class.  Furthermore, the longer students take classes, the more they find themselves a part of the Latin Expressions family.  Latin Expressions’ students and staff cherish the relationships they build through dance as much as dance itself.

In Kyle’s opinion, Latin Expressions Dance Company differs from other dance studios in many aspects, but two are more notable than the rest.  First, powered by the Afro-Cuban roots of Latin dancing, Latin Expressions’ classes and events are filled with a diverse and welcoming group of people from all walks of life that appreciate the art of Latin music and dance.  Regardless of age, race, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status, individuals from all backgrounds feel comfortable and welcomed.  Second, this atmosphere creates an environment where the relationships built on the dance floor turn into lifelong friendships off the dance floor.

LE-Classes-042Kyle’s proudest moment as an instructor doesn’t boil down to a single moment, but ultimately comes from watching the growth of his students and helping them achieve their goals.  Nothing is more satisfying than seeing that drive in a student’s eyes, pushing/challenging them, watching their hard work and then finally seeing the joy in their face as they succeed.

As cliché as it sounds, Kyle believes that the biggest mistake he sees people make is coming in with the wrong attitude.  Latin Expressions primarily teaches adults and many of them come in shy or embarrassed about dancing because it is something they have either never done or never felt it was something at which they were very good.  That mentality often causes people to fail before they even try because they don’t expect to succeed so they don’t fully try to succeed.  The best learners and students always tend to be the ones who ask questions because they aren’t afraid, shy or embarrassed to not know everything but they ask because they WANT to know everything.

LE-Classes-045Latin Expressions’ goal for this year is to continue the growth of the Indianapolis Salsa community.  That was their top priority from the start.  They intend to grow in ways that offer a better experience for their students in 2015.  For their first three years, Latin Expressions was done on the side as both owners had full-time jobs during the day.  That will no longer be the case.  There are many things they hope to improve as Latin Expressions goes forward from here.

Kyle and Nadia started Latin Expressions as a dream to push the Indianapolis Salsa scene to reach its fullest potential.  They are very proud of the progress they have made thus far, but they are only getting started.

They actually teach out of Riolo Dance.  We are very fortunate and blessed to have such a beautiful location from which to teach and cherish their relationship with Riolo Dance very much.
