The Dancer’s Pointe Interview with Susan Schott Martucci

The owner of Temilys-leap-in-2ndhe Dancer’s Pointe in Orlando, Florida, Susan Schott Martucci, describes her dance studio as offering quality dance education in an atmosphere that is warm and caring. Dancer’s Pointe opened in 1990 and has been teaching dance in the same location, south of downtown Orlando, ever since.

The Dancer’s Pointe is proud of all of their dancers, both current and alumni – not only those who have continued in the world of dance through college and the professional dance world, but also those who have chosen different paths. They believe that regardless of the path chosen, their students and alumni are doing it better and with more style because they are dancers!

In Susi’s opinion, her dance studio is separated from other studios because their dance studio focuses on being a good corporate citizen. For many years, they have participated in fund raising events for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund) and FFB (Foundation Fighting Blindness) both inspired by people involved with their studio. They collaborate in providing dance experiences with Russell Home for Atypical Children and frequently support community events at local schools, hospitals, nursing homes, churches, etc.

Susi’s proudest moment coaching occurred when alumni students started bringing their children to her for dance lessons!

The biggest mistake Susi sees dancers make is losing patience with themselves. She opines that it’ is very difficult for students in this day and age of technology and its immediacy, to work at a methodical pace that will eventually result in improvement, but not necessarily overnight. They need to slow down a bit, embrace the hours in a dance class, away from smart phones, and cherish dreamersthe process! Becoming a dancer is a journey, not a destination.

Every year Susi loves to see the transformation of her students, from children taking dance classes to “dancers.” She personally encourages all of her students to think of themselves as dancers in their everyday lives, not just in the dance studio. She believes that if they think of themselves as dancers all of the time, they will do everything with more style and grace.

The Dancer’s Pointe has several classes for dancers from 4 years old to adult. They teach Ballet, Pre-Pointe, Pointe, Acrobatics, Jazz, Tap, Ballet Choreography, Clogging, Contemporary, Modern Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Leaps & Turns and  Storyballet (Ages 5-7).

Their performing and competition company, Pointe of Impact (POI), performs at various community and charity events throughout Orlando and in dance competitions held throughout the year. Dancers from 7 to 18 are encouraged to audition.

Susi opened The Dancer’s Pointe 26 years ago. It was a natural marriage of two of her favorite things that she most values: the art of dance and the promise of young people.

After graduating from college, dancing professionally and then teaching in Tampa and Orlando, Susi opened The Dancer’s Pointe. Since opening in 1990, the dance studio has grown significantly. Susi is particularly proud of her students’ growth. Additionally, they have won many honors and awards in local, regional and national competitions. Susi has a B.A. Degree in Dance from St. Leo University and did graduate work in Elementary Education at the University of Central Florida. She is the former Dance Director for Bethea-Ebsen Center, is a certified and active member of Florida Dance Masters, Inc. and is currently serving on its board as the Director of Continuing Education. Additionally, Susi has choreographed many productions for various companies throughout Florida, including the Civic Theatre of Central Florida, Class Act Productions in Tampa and Miss Dance of Florida Scholarship Pageant. She was a professionally for Walt Disney World and in many fine hotels throughout Central Florida. Additionally, Susi has been married for 20 years and has 3 children, ages 12-19.
