Dance To EvOLvE Interview with Brittany White

KidsBrittany White is the Owner and Director of Dance To EvOLvE, Inc. Dance To EvOLvE is a mobile dance company offering classes all around the country at third party venues. They specialize in children’s dance classes teaching tap, ballet and hip hop to students 2 to 12 years of age.

In Brittany’s opinion, what separates her dance studio from other dance studios is their mobile business model. They have classes near almost everyone’s neighborhood, making them very convenient.

All of their classes are located in third party venues around San Diego, Chicago and Seattle. Through their great teachers, they offer exciting classes in recreation centers, schools and other venues, specializing in children from 2 to 12 years of age. They are a team who is deeply passionate about what they do! In addition to dance classes, Dance To EvOLvE offers summer camps, fun birthday parties, daycare and after school programs.

It takes a special skill set to teach young children. That is very different from teaching advanced classes. They specialize in this age so that their teachers are the best of the best for the age group that they to which they cater.

EvOLvE believes it is the teacher that makes the difference. Each of their teachers is carefully chosen based on their experience, passion, professionalism, and bubbliness! Small student ratios, curriculum goals, and ongoing teacher training all come together to create EvOLvE’s progressive and age appropriate classes. EvOLvE’s talented teachers create warm, welcoming classes that balance learning with fun so that their students are always improving with a smile and a giggle! Fun props and creative imagery add to the nonstop class energy!

Brittany says that as teachers, they have many proud moments. From when a student Rehearsalfinally executes a move correctly, to a young shy dancer who breaks out of their shell in your class because they are feeling safe and having fun and you were able to connect and engage with them – those are all fantastically proud moments. Of course, there is also the annual recital when they are continuously surprised at how well the 2, 3 and 4 year olds can do on stage.

According to Brittany, parents often think that if their little dancer doesn’t shine on day one, then dance is not for them. Brittany is continually reminding parents that it is a lot of newness for young ones on the first day of dance class – a new teacher, a new place, new music, new friends, etc. It is normal for the children to just soak it in. It is completely normal for new dancers to react with tears or to be a little high-energy since they have not yet learned the structure or expectations of the class. That is what tiny tot classes are for! It takes some time. Keep them coming!

Brittany says that as a dance studio, they always want to increase the class room experience for their dancers. Consequently, she is really trying to review her administrative processes to streamline their classes so that they can have that extra time to devote to improving their dancers’ experience through teacher training.

According to Brittany, she was always a teacher on the side with no ambition to start her own studio. When she was in-between more traditional jobs about six to seven years ago, she started teaching her own class at the local recreation center. The class grew very quickly and she saw that there was a need for a niche here to concentrate on the young ones. There was a need for great teachers for the little ones. Too often, studios concentrate on the more advanced classes and do not offer the best experience for the Practicelittle ones. So, starting Dance To EvOLvE was very organic based on initial success that was a surprise.

For anyone interested in Brittany’s professional experience, she has a bio on Dance to EvOLvE’s website. As far as her instructors, Brittany believes it is about hiring the best teachers, not necessarily the best dancers. She spends a lot of time working with her teachers, helping them reach their potential and believes it is her job to teach their teachers. But one thing that she cannot teach, is loving to work with their age group, or what Brittany calls having the X factor. That is what she looks for when she hires, the rest, they can teach.
