Different Styles of Dance Shorts

Hi, I am Cyndi from bdancewear.com and in this tutorial I am going to tell you about our shorts and things you should look for when you purchase a pair of shorts.

  1. Booty Shorts

These are our Booty Shorts. Our Booty Shorts are the lowest height that we have and the shortest inseam.  The reason we developed our Booty Short is that we had a lot of girls that were purchasing our regular shorts but they wanted a little bit less in height and a pair of shorts that were a little bit skimpier. In response, we basically rolled down the waistband on the regular shorts and took off an inch from the hem. That equals our Booty Shorts. It is the exact same pattern except that the regular shorts are a 1 ¼ inches taller and an inch longer in the inseam. Depending on whether they are for a child or an adult, the inseam is about an inch or inch and a half in the adult size. And a little bit less for a child’s size. This is the most popular shorts that we have.

  1. Regular Shorts

The next shorts would be our regular shorts which are perfect if you want a little more coverage. The inseam is about an inch longer than the Booty and about an inch or inch and a half taller than the Booty Shorts. One of the reasons you might want a regular shorts is if your studio is a little bit more conservative. These are the perfect shorts for you because it gives you a little more coverage. If you are doing a lot of leg extensions, or aerial work, or maybe you are doing some contortion stuff, you will really want more coverage with all that bending. This would be the great pair of shorts for that – it would be the perfect choice.

  1. High Waisted Shorts

Next, we have the High Waisted Shorts. The thing about our High Waisted Shorts is that there is a wide band on top rather than elastic like we have on our other shorts. There are also bands on the bottom at the hems. The reason we have the bands on the bottom is that elastic tends to bunch the thighs and give them a kind of a funky look. So we used a piece of the same material as the body of the shorts but a little bit smaller around the thighs so that you get that staying power without that funky look to your skin. One of the things I like about the bands on the bottom of the High Waisted Shorts is that whenever you have high waisted shorts, everything wants to go up to the smallest part of your torso and having the bands on the bottom helps to keep it down the shorts down where they belong.

Everybody is different but when the waistband on a pair of High Waisted Shorts is left unfolded, the waistband reaches the natural waistline for most people. The natural waistline is the smallest point in the middle of the torso. One of the things that is great about these shorts is that you can also fold the waistband down like a yoga pant and shorten the height of it. You can tack that folded waistband down if you want to make sure that it stays in place and does not move. But this is a great versatile short.  You may not want to tack it down in case there are times that you that do not want the waistband folded over. That is strictly your choice.

A few other things to consider when getting shorts from us or someone else is if you have a light color, like white or baby pink, you want to make sure that they are lined. All of our light colored shorts have a light bathing suit lining. However, they do fit a little bit snugger when they are lined. Therefore, I suggest that if you barely fit into a pair of shorts based upon your measurements – let’s say you are a small adult, you are almost up to a medium –  I suggest that you go up to the next size because it will give you a little bit more comfort. Also, if the shorts are for a child, it will give them that room to grow throughout the year. I have found that if you order now and you want them to last to the end of the year, you do not want them to be on that very edge. You want to make sure that they are in a size that is a little loose because that gives them a little room because they are going to grow. You want to have a little bit of room so that after you put appliqués on, or rhinestones, or whatever you want to do, you do not end up with shorts that are too tight.
