How to Make a Pattern For an A-Line Maxi Skirt

In this video, I’m going to show you how to make an A-line skirt pattern. It’s very simple to do. This one we are going to do in two pieces, and in later videos I will show you other versions.  An A-line is more fitted around the hip or waist depending where you want to wear it and flairs out like an A. When you make your pattern you can have a nice wide line or bring it in to have it more tapered. It just depends on the style you are going for. I like to use a patterned paper when creating the pattern, but you can always use an old sheet laying around your house. This is one of my favorite skirts to wear, it looks both short or long depending on your preference. I can’t wait to share the guide with you so you can soon know how to make your own A-Line Maxi Skirt too!

Supplies:

  1. Measuring Tape
  2. Scissors
  3. Sharpie
  4. Ruler
  5. Pattern Paper of Old Sheet

Directions:

  1. Take Measurements

The first thing that you want to do is find the measurement for your waist or your hip, wherever the line is that you want to the skirt to begin at. Then you’re going to find your actual hip, not your high hip where you would possibly want to wear your skirt. Also figure out the length that you will want the skirt. Another important measurement is the distance from the top of the skirt to your hip. Then fold the paper or old sheet in half.

  1. Mark the Measurements on the Pattern Paper/Old Sheet

Now let’s go ahead and make a straight line across where your waist line will be at. In my particular case, where the top measurement is to my hip is 10 inches. However many inches yours is, draw the line across. Now you take the measurement where you are going to wear the skirt and add 1.5 inches. For example 25.5 + 1.5 = 27. Since I folded the paper in half, I will then divide 27 by 4 which is 6 ¾. Repeat the same steps for the hip measurement. 38.5 + 1.5 = 40/4 = 10.  Draw a line where the waist is that you came up with from the equation. Measure down to your hip, and draw the line with the length of the answer to the equation you did as well. You can do this before or after, but you will need to add a seam allowance. In this case, I am going to add a .5 inch. For the bottom of the skirt I am going to mark it 20 inches across. Mark the length you want the skirt to be on the paper/sheet. Don’t forget to add an inch for the hemline to the length. From the top point, to the bottom, draw the diagonal line adding 3 inches then straight down.
