Miss Tirita’s Dance and Performing Arts Studio Interview with Tirita Montross

Stage PerformanceMiss Tirita’s Dance and Performing Arts Studio has been serving the Sand Springs, Oklahoma, area since 1990, and is celebrating their 25th year this season! Their studio hopes to instill the love of art through dance and music. It is designed to be a safe place filled with love and encouragement through creative movement.

In the opinion of the studio’s owner, Tirita Montross, their studio is different from other studios because it is full of dancers who are nurtured with positive words, lots of praise, constructive teaching of technique and many hugs! They are a dance family business and their waiting room is full of 2nd generation dancers!

Tirita has had many proud moments coaching to choose from over the years, but the biggest joy she receives are the dancers that SMILE the biggest when dancing, knowing that she was a small part of that smile and confidence!

They are not a competitive dance studio; they are performance based and what the industry refers to as a “recreational” studio. It works for them, too many times kids are asked to compete at all levels and it sometimes can be discouraging. There is a time and place for Classcompetitive dance, just as there is a place for a great dance school that has more focus on the student as a whole, rather than just competition.

Their studio’s goal is to bring in more new students and maintain their current students. They are up by forty dancers this year! Tirita’s hope is to provide a studio where success is measured through the enjoyment of dance. For some, it is the freedom of movement and expression, for others it is the experience of performing before an audience. Whatever the motivation, encouragement, warmth and generosity are paramount and given to all.

Tirita began as a teacher at this studio and had the opportunity to purchase it. Her focus was to grow the studio into a business with lasting roots.

She loves being “Miss Tirita.” She loves getting random hugs even little smiles from dancers all over town! Nothing makes her PROUDER than to have a brother, grandpa, dancer, former dancer, etc., come up and say “you probably don’t remember me” and then tell her their name and she does! It might be 10, 15 or even 20 years after they danced through her life but to know that they still want to say hello, makes her life very FULL!

DancersTirita fell in love with dance at the age of three years old. She continued dancing in jazz, tap, acrobatics, and ballet. She won numerous honors and awards with Dance Master of America. She also danced with the Tulsa School of Ballet under the direction of Moscelyne Larkin and the late Roman Jasinski. Miss Tirita was awarded a scholarship to study at the Quartz Mountain Arts Institute in Ballet. Miss Tirita performed in the Tulsa Nutcracker and Firebird as an apprentice in the corps of ballet for the Tulsa Ballet Theater. Also, Tirita has a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and has since been a teacher with Sand Springs Schools. She is currently a Parent Educator for the Parents As Teachers program.

Tirita has logged over 1,000 performances in the musical Oklahoma at the outdoor theater production at Discoverland! She danced the lead role of Miss Dream Laurey and also became company manager and assistant director. Miss Tirita finished out her 12 year career at Discoverland by becoming the choreographer of the pre-show and Oklahoma.
