Premier Academy of Dance Interview with Roxanne Underhill and Michelle Thompson

Roxy and MichellePremier Academy of Dance, in Lakewood, Colorado, is a brand new dance studio run by two women, Roxanne Underhill and Michelle Thompson, who are very passionate about what they do. Their goal is to bring together their community through the love of dance. They offer everything from preschool to adult classes. Competitive and just for fun! They have it all and are always trying to be involved in community events.

Roxanne Underhill, the Co-Owner and Program Director, believes that their studio is set apart from other dance studios because they work hard to ensure everyone who wants to dance is able to. They do fundraisers, charity events, and work with low income families who might not be able to afford dance otherwise to make sure anyone who is passionate for dance is able to participate. Premier Academy of Dance, formally Get Fit Dance, ranked in the top 10 best dance studios in Denver on Denver’s A List in 2014!

According to Roxanne Underhill, it has been incredible watching the group of girls who started with us when they first opened grow week after week. Recital after recital. Not only as dancers but grow together as a family and as well rounded individuals.

She sees a lot of judgment in the dance community. She believes that they should be building each other up not tearing each other down. They are all here for the same reason; they love to dance. She always tells her classes to encourage each other, learn from each other, and really try to work as a teamPerformance to help each other grow.

Roxanne says they want to reach out to as many kids as possibly to share their love of dance with them whether it is through community events, shows, or competitions. They just want to show them what they have to offer. They also want to continue to grow as a studio, as dancers, and also as a community.

Roxanne started when she met an amazing dancer, Michelle Thompson, now business partner. They were dancing on a pro team together. They were also teaching at the same studio that sadly closed. It was then that Roxanne and Michelle decided they wanted to continue teaching. They said they can do this! This is something they love! This is something they are both good at! It was then their journey began.

Roxy was born and raised in Colorado and fell in love with dance at the age of 3 while taking a ballet class at a local recreation center. All through school she continued her dance education at Colorado Center of Dance taking everything from lyrical to jazz to hip hop. She was captain of GMHS Poms and led the team to compete at NDA Nationals in Florida. While in high school she taught children’s hip hop classes at the Academy of Performing Arts. Roxanne continued her love of dance in college at Metro State University studying business management with a minor in dance. She recently danced with Blush Pro Dance Team in Denver. She has also received her certification for Insanity, Piyo, and Turbokick. Roxanne has two little girls, Kiyah and Jazlynn, and can’t wait to inspire dancers of all ages through Premier Academy of Dance

Michelle oversees the classical dance program at Premier Academy. She has studied many different styles of dance since the age of 3 including Highland, jazz, lyrical/modern, tap and classical ballet. In conjunction with her studio training, she danced for her high school’s pom team and coached the squad later on. Throughout her dance career, she has performed in a variety of Ballet Classdance showcases and has performed on Carnival Cruise Lines as well as at Disneyland and California Adventure. Michelle graduated from ULV with a degree in Psychology focusing on Child Development and the Child/Family dynamic. Michelle owned Sky High mobile dance company in Sacramento, California before moving to Colorado in 2011. Michelle received her Insanity, Piyo and Turbo Kick certification in 2014 and looks forward to sharing her love of fitness with members of the Premier Family.  Michelle loves dancing at the studio with her daughter Sierra and inspiring other studentss of all ages!

Roxanne says that the Premier Academy of Dance is still very new. They opened in January of last year. They are so excited to continue on this journey they started and cannot wait to grow year after year and spread the love of dance.
