The Healthy Dancer Interview with Diana Harris

DiannaAccording to Diana Harris, the mission of her blog, The Healthy Dancer, is to aid the development of intelligent, thinking, healthy dancers and to draw attention to ways that dancers can improve their technique through cross-training, better nutrition and body awareness.

Diana has had many happy moments related to dance. She is always very happy to watch her students succeed when they have been struggling, or watch people who did not think they could dance, take part in a performance or flash mob. For her, personally, she is experiencing an important moment in her career right now as she recently wrote a college textbook on musical theatre dance that is in the process of being published.

It is Diana’s hope that her blog will help to educate dancers, dance parents and dance educators about the body. Diana believes it is very important that dancers have some knowledge about their bodies and that they all find healthy ways to teach dance.  Di DancingSometimes they need to question tradition based upon the new scientific knowledge that they have about how their bodies develop and work.

Diana advises dancers that they learn about their bodies, listen to their bodies. They only get one body, and it has to last them for their entire life. She wants them to understand that there is a way to do what they enjoy and not abuse their body.

Diana loves it when dancers, parents or educators send her requests for her to write about topics they would like to see her cover on the blog. Diana wants them to use her blog as a resource.
