This list is meant to highlight some of the awesome high school dance teams throughout the United States and in no way is meant to be a comprehensive list. We here at BDancewear.com think that all dance teams are doing something amazing and deserve recognition! This is a small list of some of the studios that we think are going above and beyond. Westmoore High School in Moore, Oklahoma, is the home of the defending 10-time in a row National Champions!!!!! Their Varsity Pom Squad won in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, two in 2014, and two in 2015. Westmoore’s Pom Dance Team (Jaguars) was awarded the national titles for 2014 and 2015 in both small varsity jazz and small varsity hip hop. That makes back-to-back double national titles!!!! They also won several state championships.
2. Murrieta Valley High School
The Murrieta Valley High School Dance Team in Murietta, California, is a competitive high school dance team (Nighthawks) which includes Varsity and Junior Varsity dancers. Dancers perform at multiple functions throughout the year; including, school rallies, athletic games, showcases, competitions, and the annual Murrieta Valley Dance Production. Dancers also attend an exciting Dance Camp each summer!!
3. John Carrol Catholic High School
The Cavalettes of John Carroll Catholic School in Birmingham, Alabama, has won several competitions. This year they competed at the January 10, 2015 UDA Alabama State Competition where the Varsity and JV Cavalettes placed 1st for both their hip hop and jazz routines. The Varsity team also received a choreography award for their Hip Hop routine. At the American All Star competition on January 17th, the Varsity team placed 1st for their hip hop routine, 3rd for the jazz routine and received choreography and technique awards and the Sweepstakes award for the overall scores of the competition. The JV Cavalettes came in 2nd for both of their routines. They recently traveled to Orlando, Florida, where they competed in the 2015 UDA National Dance Team Championship! They competed against approximately 70 teams, advanced to the final rounds of competition in both the Small Varsity Jazz and Small Varsity Hip Hop categories. In the Small Varsity Hip Hop category, they came in 11th place and in the Small Varsity Jazz category, came in 15th place. The JV Cavalettes came in 7th place for their hip hop routine and 8th place for their jazz routine. The Cavalettes represented John Carroll with class and school pride.
The Royal Oak High School Dance Teams, in Royal Oak Michigan, are spirit squads used to support the football and basketball teams at Royal Oak High School as well as additional athletic teams. They are comitted to providing quality entertainment* at half time performances, competitions, pep rallies and parades as well as school spirit. Both the Varsity and JV attend Universal Dance Association dance camps during the summer. The teams compete locally at competitions hosted by UDA and the Palace of Auburn Hills. In addition, the Varsity team aims to attend UDA Nationals in Orlando, Florida every February. The teams perform in jazz, hip hop, high kick and pom styles.
The Northville High School Varsity Dance Company is the first dance group established at Northville High School and is now is in its ninth year of operation! They are an after-school, performance-based dance company that offers dancers opportunities to perform at Northville High School sports games, different events in the community, local high school dance shows, as well as local dance competitions. Dancers also get the chance to expand their dance training, knowledge, and experience through teaching and choreographing pieces for different genres of dance. Most importantly, the dancers learn the importance of working together as a team and get the opportunity to build to lifelong friendships. Our dance season starts in the summer months and last through March. Upon completion of one dance season, which includes performances, student leadership, and community involvement; dancers receive a Northville High School Varsity letter.
Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township, Michigan is a Blue Ribbon Exemplary School. Their Varsity dance team are UDA State and Regional Champions in Hip Hop and Jazz; UDA National Champions in Hip Hop and National Runner Up in Jazz. Their JV Dance team’s last season was an Undefeated season. They were the UDA State and Regional Champions and the UDA National Champions in Poms and 3rd in Jazz.
7. South Brunswick High School
In 2014, the South Brunswick High School in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, were very successful in their competitions. They were the National SemiFinalists in Pom and Jazz, Northeast Regional Champions in Pom and Jazz, NJ State Dance Champions in Jazz; 1st Place Pom and Jazz at the Barnegat Invitational; 1st Place Pom and Jazz at the Lyndhurst Invitational. At the Ramapo Invitational they were 1st Place in Jazz (Black Team) and 1st Place in Pom (Gold Team) and at the Paramus Catholic Invitational they took 1st Place in Pom and Jazz (Gold Team).
8. Teurlings Catholic High School
The Rebel Revue, the dance team of Teurling Catholic High School in Lafayette, Louisiana, has won championship awards almost every year since 1998. In 2015, The Rebel Revue were the Louisiana Varsity Hip Hop State Champions and the Louisiana Small Varsity Jazz State Champions. They also won the Most Crowd Appeal Award. All eighth grade, freshman, sophomore, and junior students registered at Teurlings Catholic for the following school year are eligible for The Rebel Revue.
Westlake High School Dance Team (Dance to Express, Not to Impress) in Westlake Village, California, is founded upon the principles of dedication, hard work and creativity. The team promotes school spirit by performing at varsity football and basketball games, school rallies and other community events. Westlake High School Dance Team is a nationally ranked team that competes in regional and national WCE and USA competitions. In the USA Nationals they won the 3rd place in intermediate dance, and Paige Ingles won the 5th place soloist. The team hosts an annual dance clinic and participants of the clinic have fun learning a routine and have the opportunity to perform with the Westwood High School’s Dance Team in their Spring Showcase. The clinic is later available on videos. The videos are separated by the age of the dancers (3 to 8 years old, 9 to 12 years old, and 13 to 15 years old) and also the whole clinic routine which gives dancers unable to attend the clinic to learn the steps and routines.
10. Academy of the Holy Angels
The Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, New Jersey, is the home of The Holy Angels Dance Team, a nationally recognized and award-winning dance team. They offer a comprehensive dance study in a variety of genres including Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Pom, and Hip Hop . These dancers have won countless State Championships as well as the National Title in 2008 at the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Florida (an amazing feat in a 70 competitor division). Currently, the Varsity Team is ranked 2nd in the nation among high school dance teams and the Junior Varsity is ranked 5th. In 2015, their Varsity team won the Varsity New Jersey State Hip Hop Champions and the Varsity New Jersey State Pom Champions. Their Junior Varsity team won the Junior Varsity New Jersey Hip Hop Champions. The team consists of dancers that share the same passion for success, taking a mandatory eight dance classes a week from leading professionals in the dance industry. Currently, the Holy Angels Dance Team has a partnership with Ballet Hispanico as well as teachers from the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Broadway Dance Center, the eight-time Collegiate National Champion University of Minnesota Dance Team, and the back-to-back National Champion Hofstra University Dance Team. Quality dance instruction is the key to their success. In addition to their commitment to artistic and technical excellence, in December 2012, these girls were awarded 1st Runner Up in the prestigious American School Spirit Award. The Holy Angels Dance Team was recognized as a top all-around dance program in the country, exemplifying community service, outstanding academic achievement, and spirit raising activities. Throughout the year, the dancers participate in multiple philanthropic endeavors supporting various organizations.
The Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, is the home of the Dazzlers (their dance team) and the home of the ‘Noles.. The Dazzlers have won many championships over the years but they are more than a dance team. They are taught many life rules. and must sign an agreement to uphold the values of the dance team. Among other things, they promise their own pride should never make another feel less, that they are who they are today because of those who raised them and that those people deserve to be honored and respected, and that they have learned nothing if all they learned to dance. Lastly on their list is: “If my dance teaches me to express myself; to work with others; to develop a sense of pride; to have discipline; to use my disappointment and failure to turn me into a stronger person, then I have the tools I need for life.” This shows their belief and persistence, which no doubt helps to make them the powerhouse high school dance team they are.
12. Peters Township High School
McMurray, Pennsylvania, is the home of the Peters Township High School dance team. The Peters Township High School’s nationally ranked dance team, the “Pulse,” has won many championships and rankings including the recent UDA Nationals Varsity in Hip Hop where the Varsity placed 2nd out of 39 in Large Varsity Hip Hop, ranked 4th out of over 100 Hip Hop teams and the Junior Varsity placed 4th in Junior Varsity Hip Hop.
Because of their success in competitions and the reputation they have, the Peters Township Varsity Dancers were twice featured on ESPN2. The dance team also hosts a Hip Hop Dance Clinic for Girls and Boys in Kindergarten through eighth grade. The clinic is also open to high school students interested in trying out for the next Peters Township High School dance team.
P-CEP is the official team of the united co-ed Varsity and JV competitive dance teams at Plymouth, Canton, and Salem High Schools located in Canton, Michigan. The P-CEP Dance Team was established in September 2010 by Coach Maria Lloyd and Coach Kelly Curtis to expand the opportunities for serious dancers, both male and female, to competitively dance in the contemporary and jazz styles for Plymouth-Canton Educational Park (P-CEP). P-CEP is the name of the high school campus composed of Plymouth, Canton, and Salem High Schools in Canton, Michigan. Originally, there was only a Varsity team. In 2013, a Junior Varsity team was formed in addition to the Varsity team. To this day, the team still holds true to its purpose: to provide elite male and female dancers at P-CEP an opportunity to have all of the benefits of a high school d ance team without sacrificing dance studio commitments. The team practices twice a week and competitions are generally on Sundays. In addition to the multiple competitions against other local high school dance teams that both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams participate in throughout the season, the team also guest performs for events in the Plymouth-Canton community, such as Diversity Show, Plymouth Saberette Show, and the Salem Rockette Show. At the end of the season, an annual recital for family and friends is held at Cherry Hill Village Theatre in Canton, Michigan. The recital allows team members to showcase their competition routines, as well as their own choreography specifically made for the recital. In addition, the annual showcase invites members of the school and community to perform with the team, such as Varsity Guy/Girl and routines from the many dance studios that team members represent. Throughout the year, the team holds many bonding activities such as a welcome potluck, fundraisers, end of the year banquet, pool parties, team sleepovers, and more. With over 6,000 students at P-CEP, P-CEP Dance Team allows both male and female dancers to find their niche with the team during their four years of high school.
Recently, P-CEP’s Junior Varsity team won 2nd place and Varsity won 3rd place hip hop, 2nd place jazz and choreography award for jazz!!! Three of their soloist took home 1st place in their categories!!!!
The Dexter High School Dance Team is a self funded varsity sport at Dexter High School in Dexter, Michigan. There is no funding from the district and fees are paid by the participants directly to the Dexter Dance Team Booster Club. The dance team performs during the fall and winter seasons. The purpose of the team is to represent Dexter High School through state-wide competitions and performances; to promote school spirit and facilitate a bonding atmosphere for all team members; to promote healthy living and physical fitness; to entertain audiences at school and community events; and the dance team performs at all home varsity football games, varsity basketball games, pep assemblies, and parades. Being part of the Dexter High School Dance Team provides an opportunity for students to work together as a team while focusing on enhancing their dance team technique. The team members are trained in a number of dance styles.
The Varsity and Junior Varsity dance teams at Foothill High School in North Tunstin, California, fosters a positive and rigorous learning environment which encourages students to value themselves and others while pursuing their maximum potential. In this environment, students care about developing personal values; respect artistic, cultural and intellectual diversity; produce quality work; and acquire the skills necessary to succeed in a dynamic, global environment. The dance teams recently did very well at the UDA Nationals. The Varsity won in Pom/Song and Jazz and the Junior Varsity in Pom/Song and Jazz.
The Dancing Eagles from Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, work hard for their name, respect and success. First competing at the Universal Dance Association summer camp, they were placed first in the Varsity category. From this, they received a bid to Nationals in Orlando, Florida and placed 7th in jazz and pom. There have been more awards since then including UDA Nationals Varsity Jazz..
17. Santa Margarita Catholic High School
The Dance Department of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, engages students artistically through various styles of dance. Students learn that dance is a highly skilled art and should be practiced in a professional manner and they have the opportunity to exercise their training in the Spring Dance Concert and the Christmas Production. The SMCHS Dance Team is a competitive performance group consisting of well trained, experienced performers who love to dance. The Dance Team members perform throughout the year at school events such as football games, basketball games, the annual Performing Arts Department Christmas Performance, as well as pep rallies and the Spring Dance Concert. The Dance Team represents SMCHS at competitions throughout Southern California and at Dance Nationals in Orlando, Florida. For six years in a row, the Eagle Dance Team has brought home National Champion titles at Contest of Champions in Orlando, and USA Nationals in Anaheim. They compete in many styles of dance including jazz, lyrical, modern, character jazz and hip-hop.
Liberty High School in Liberty, Missouri, is the home of th Liberty high School Sapphires, the name of the school’s dance team. The Sapphires have many awards and in 2015 they placed 8th in the UDA National Championships in the Jazz Category. Also in 2015, they placed 1st place in the Missouri State Dance Champions. 1st in the Missouri State All-Academic State Champions and 1st place as overall Missouri Regional Competition. In addition to their responsibilities to the school for school activities and their competitions, the team hosts a Pom and Cheer Clinic for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
The Brebeuf Jesuit High School Girls Varsity Dance Team finished 1st Place in the Indiana High School Dance Team Association State Championships. The team closed out their highly successful season as *State Champions* in the AA Jazz division and State Runner Ups in the AA Hip Hop division! Also, this was the third State Championship for the Brebeuf Dance Team, winning previously in 2010 and 2012. Additionally, one of their soloists finished 4th in State Senior Solos and two of their younger soloists finished 3rd and 5th in the State Junior Solos.
20. Thomas Jefferson High School
The dance team of Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia, has won several awards for their dancing. Most recently, in December, 2014, at the Winterfest Dance Competition, they placed 1st in Kick, 2nd in Pom and 3rd in Jazz. One of their duos (Cece Xiao and Vivian Fang) took 2nd Place and two of their soloists placed. Cece Xiao took 1st place and Vivian Fang took 4th place. At the Brooke Point Dance Invitation in February, 2015, the Varsity Team placed 1st in the Large Varsity Pom, 2nd in Varsity Lyrical, and 3rd in Varsity Kick. One of their duos (Cece Xiao and iian Fang) placed 1st in the Senior Duet/Trio category and one of their soloists (Katherine Barbano) placed 1st in the Senior Tap Solo.
The Ringgold High School Tiger Girls are dedicated to promoting spirit throughout the school and community. The Tiger Girls Dane Team was started in 2008. They perform at football ga3es, basketball games, pep rallies, and community events. The Tiger Girls competed for the third time at UDA Nationals in February, 2015, the biggest stage in th country for competitive team dance. The Ringgold High School Tiger Girls Dance Tam ar three time State Champions – 2015 Varsity Hip Hop Champions, 2014 Small Varsity Hip Hop Champions, and 2014 Small Varsity Pom Champions. Additionally, The team puts on a “Tiger Girls in Training” Summer Dance Camp open for children *ages 4 – 12. The campers will learn jazz, hip hop dance routines and sideline dances. All of the participants will be invited to dance on the sidelines before the first Ringgold home football game!
